EC VFP Thematic Network |
| 2002 | 2006 | 1) To assess the degree and impact of changes in diversity of dominant marine benthic species on coastal ecosystems, by describing the (changes in) distribution of Macoma balthica and Mytilus edulis , and the consequences for the functioning of the ecosystem; 2) to understand the functional aspects of high biodiversity in coastal benthic systems, by comparing 3 systems (Mediterranean, Atlantic, Baltic) with very different biodiversity but apparently similar productivity; 3) to integrate results and to disseminate the results to the managers of environmental (coastal) quality control and the public in large. |

2005 |
Capacity building in the Mediterranean Sea |
EC VFP Thematic Network |
|
| 2002 | 2005 | 1) create the infrastructure for marine biodiversity research in Europe, by creating a pan-European network of marine scientists; improve the science by cataloguing the existing expertise and infrastructure, by defining and prioritising the issues at stake; provide an intellectually attractive environment for young scientists and a discussion forum for all; 2) create awareness on the issues at stake and enlarge the visibility of marine biodiversity research in Europe: communicate with EU policy makers and politicians (presentation of marine biodiversity issues at the European Platform for Biodiversity Research Strategy meetings), liaison with global organisations and programmes, and dissemination of information to the public at large |

| SALVA | 2003 | 2005 | (1) Evaluation of the health and biodiversity status in coastal marine and lagoon environments; (2) Evaluation of the coastal marine environment responses to variation in sea-lagoon exchanges; (3) Evaluation of the tendency to distrophic events finalised to the sustainable management of lagoon resources. |
MIUR |
| ETHOFISH | 2002 | 2005 | The main ideas at the basis of our proposal are 1) that the levels at which an environmental constraint becomes 'ecologically active' is reached much at lower levels than the lethal levels. 2) that the well-being of coastal fishes is determined by their behavioural performance in selecting appropriate habitats, in searching for prey or avoiding predators, and in other important behaviour such as schooling or aggregation. |
